The deadline for registering to vote is this Friday. Those who don't make that deadline cannot vote in the November elections.
There's a lot at stake this Election Day. We'll elect a new governor and lieutenant governor, a state senator, two state representatives and a congressional representative. We'll also elect a new president and vice president. We'll vote on a huge education bond that could send large sums of money to both Western Carolina University and Southwestern Community College. Of particular local interest should be the non-binding referendum to determine whether Jackson should have an elected or appointed county manager. Don't be a bystander while others make the decisions that will impact you and your future. Register now so you can vote Nov. 7. Thanks to firefightersAll of us have a chance to show our volunteer firefighters how much we appreciate them this Saturday during the Sylva Fire Department's annual open house. We depend on them for help when we need it, and they're always available. They have invited us to stop by to have fun and learn about fire safety. Let's accept their invitation and help make their open house a big success. And while we're at it, let's say 'thank you' to every one of the dedicated members of our seven county volunteer fire departments: Sylva, Cullowhee, Cashiers-Glenville, Savannah, Canada, Qualla and Balsam-Willets-Ochre Hill. They're there for us in our times of trouble. We're lucky to have them. Editorial policyThe opinions expressed on this page are those of the Sylva Herald Editorial Committee.
