Celebrating freedom

While we may give up a few things by choosing to make our homes in Jackson County, a first-rate Fourth of July celebration is not one of them.

We've seen lots of Independence Days come and go on Main Street, and we think this year's celebration of our country's freedom was absolutely the best yet.

In addition to an awe-inspiring fireworks display shot from the lawn of our historic courthouse, one that is widely acknowledged to be the best ever, our recreation department added lots of new activities designed to keep everyone entertained downtown throughout the evening.

We had great music and lots of food. There were games for the kids and grown-ups alike. We had a chance to relax with our families and friends and catch up on everybody's news. We had fun.

And the crowds were there. Some estimates place the number of folks downtown in the thousands. We didn't count, but we know we saw the most people we've ever seen at a Fourth of July party in Sylva.

Out-of-towners in the crowd were audibly impressed with the pyrotechnics. They "oohed" and "aahed" at all the appropriate times and were overheard saying "This is better than Raleigh's" and "This is like being in Charlotte only with a nicer crowd."

Our hats are off to the all hard-workers who planned such a successful event.

Thanks to Jeff Carpenter and the recreation department for the amazing fireworks, incredible music and fun games and contests.

SPIR, Sylva's downtown revitalization group, sponsored a packed bingo tent, sold baked goods and engraved bricks and coordinated all other vendors. We appreciate their dedication and energy.

We also want to thank the Sylva Police Department for their assistance with traffic control, and the Sylva Fire Department for standing by during the event.

Most of all, we'd like to thank all who came downtown to celebrate our country's birthday together. By turning out in record numbers to enjoy the event, you made the efforts of all the sponsors and organizers worthwhile.
