Editorials - 12/06/02New officials poised to make their mark on Jackson County |
|
Monday marked a day of change for Jackson County government with the swearing-in of a new sheriff, three first-time county commissioners and a new commissioners' chairman.
Though some of the faces are different, we believe these elected officials will continue our county's long tradition of dedicated leadership and community service. Each of them will face challenges in their new roles, and we are confident that all are up to the task. Sheriff Jimmy Ashe possesses the skills and judgment acquired through a distinguished career in law enforcement. At his installation ceremony, he pledged to usher in an era of cooperation with town, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Such interagency ties are vital in these uncertain times when enemies of the United States stand poised to attack or disrupt our way of life. Commissioners' Chairman Stacy Buchanan, along with new board members Brian McMahan, Eddie Madden and Joe Cowan and returning commissioner Roberta Crawford, will face difficult decisions with regard to land use planning and continued economic growth. We are confident they will act to ensure a better tomorrow for everyone in the county. We wish them well as they begin their work on behalf of all of us.

Local merchants invite everyone to enjoy holiday season |
|
Dillsboro's merchants have issued their annual invitation to the town's holiday festival - a four-night medley of lights, candles and music.
Accept that invitation and head down to Dillsboro either this Friday and Saturday (Dec. 6-7) or the next (Dec. 13-14). You'll find the brick sidewalks lined with luminaries and the quaint shops rimmed with lights. There will be music, laughter and yuletide treats, and the town's specialty shops will stay open late. In the same spirit, downtown Sylva merchants have organized an open house this Saturday, Dec. 7. Stores will stay open until 9 p.m., offer refreshments and donate a portion of their day's proceeds to the Jackson County Christmas Store. Enjoy the merchants' hospitality and shop locally during these two special events.
