Editorials - 11/28/02Count local Habitat volunteers among our mountain blessings |
|
All of us can find something to be thankful for during this special time of year. Our beautiful mountain location and Jackson County's caring citizenry are great places to start.
Thanksgiving is the one day set aside each year for the purpose of counting our blessings, a tradition that goes back to 1621 and the Plymouth colonists. Heading the list of local blessings this year are our Jackson County Habitat for Humanity volunteers. These dedicated individuals finished their latest house just in time for Walter, Anthony and Jennifer McDowell to celebrate Thanksgiving in their new home, which was completed earlier this month and dedicated Sunday. A non-profit, ecumenical Christian ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing by building simple, decent, affordable housing, Habitat provides a hand up and restores dignity to families willing to work for their own home. We're thankful for the Habitat volunteers and their efforts to improve our community, and we appreciate all the individuals and groups who donate time, talents, food and materials to make their projects successful.

Celebrate downtown - come to the parade |
|
Downtown Sylva will once again be the scene of the opening of the local Christ-mas holiday season. Our annual nighttime parade will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday with local radio pioneers Jim and Mickie Childress serving as grand marshals and ³The Lights of the Season² as its theme.
Christmas spirit should be everywhere. The historic county courthouse will sparkle on its hilltop, resplendent in greenery and lights, gracing our parade with the charm of a bygone era. The antique street lights are decked with greenery, bows and tiny lights. But it won't matter how great the parade is or how beautiful downtown looks unless people turn out to witness the event. So let's make this one the best-attended parade ever. Harris Regional Hospital's Hospice Tree of Remembrance will be lit by the Childresses at 6:30 p.m. and the parade will follow soon after. Sylva Partners in Renewal, parade sponsor, and event organizer Betty Foxx have worked hard to make this year's parade a huge success. We'll see you there.
