Election reflection

Voters across the nation turned out Tuesday to cast their ballots in what has turned out to be the closest presidential election in U.S. history.

The race between Texas Governor George W. Bush and Vice President Al Gore remained too close to call Wednesday morning, leaving the identity of the nation's 43rd president hinging on a recount of Florida votes. Several North Carolina races were decided by less than 1 percent of the vote. Closer to home, one state House seat from the 52nd District was decided by only a few votes.

In the only Jackson County-specific question, local voters presented county commissioners with the answer they sought with citizens clearly supporting an appointed county manager. Don't ever think your vote doesn't count.

Honoring veterans

Democracy reigns in America because of the sacrifice of ordinary men and women like Bill McClure, whose story is told in this issue through a letter from one of his World War II fighting companions.

We honor all of our veterans on the day that marks the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, which was the end of World War I. The day is meant to be a time of reflection - a time to remind ourselves and our children of a group of special Americans who gave everything they had, every time they were asked.

Start Saturday off right by thanking members of your own family who either serve or have served in the armed forces. Next bid a "happy Veterans Day" to others in our community who are, or were, a part of this brave legacy.

We owe them respect, and we owe them our freedom.

Residents of Cashiers: Don't miss opportunity

Two meetings of great significance to the fu-ture of Cashiers are coming up next week.

Jackson County's second Smart Growth meeting will be Monday at the Community Center, and Tuesday's Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority session will be held at the Albert Carlton Library.

While meetings such as these are usually held down the mountain, both of these are in downtown Cashiers. Those of you who care about your community's future should plan to attend both.

County commissioners, recognizing the importance of both sessions, moved the date of the Smart Growth meeting to avoid a conflict with TWSA.

Don't miss this opportunity to tell county and TWSA leaders about your vision for your community - make plans to attend both Smart Growth and TWSA.
