Editorials - 09/20/01Proud of county's response to attacks |
|
While we in Jackson County may never get over the shock and horror we felt as last Tuesday's terrorist attacks unfolded, we can take a measure of comfort from our collective response.
Our emergency workers, civic groups and churches have raised money to aid the victims. Our schoolchildren are collecting supplies, making donations and writing letters in support of fellow students in New York City. Jackson County has a history of compassion and caring. We were generous in our support and aid for the victims of Hurricane Floyd two Septembers ago, and we'll do all we can to aid those in New York and Washington, D.C., who were victimized by last week's tragedy. We're proud of our county's patriotic response.
Canada school site should be put to useOnce upon a time the Canada School was the center of its community. It educated the children and provided a home for events and programs of all kinds. It was a proving ground for the innovative Teacher Corps, and it even hosted the nation's First Lady. Those who remember Canada School's glory days are no doubt saddened to see its current disrepair. The unsecured building is now a liability, residents say, because it has become a haven for vandals. Canada firefighters two years ago asked school officials to give them the property. They planned to raze the old building to provide additional parking for fire department and community center events and to expand recreation opportunities. School leaders wanted to honor that request, but the property had to be deeded to Jackson County, which provides funding and other support for our volunteer fire departments. The county has owned the old school for close to a year now, and it's time for some action. Canada community representatives plan to appear at the commissioners' meeting tonight to ask county leaders to move forward with plans to eliminate the old school and develop a recreation site. We hope our county commissioners will do all they can to aid Canada's firefighters with their plans. |
