By naming their baseball coach to lead their football program, Smoky Mountain High
School Principal Kenny Nicholson and Athletic Director Si Simmons have hit a home run.
A proven winner who has earned the respect of his players and fellow coaches, Tim Hawkins is a Sylva-Webster graduate who played three sports for the Golden Eagles. During his years at S-W, Hawkins had a chance to learn from the legendary Babe Howell, among the winningest prep football coaches in North Carolina history.
With his strong roots to both the school and Jackson County, Hawkins, a Wilmot native, should be just the person to return a sense of history and pride to the Mustang football program.
"If we had looked all over, we couldn't have found a better candidate," Principal Nicholson said.
We agree. We applaud Tim's selection and wish him success in his effort to restore what once was a given for Sylva - a winning football team.
