Tim Hawkins is right choice to lead SMHS football program

By naming their baseball coach to lead their football program, Smoky Mountain High School Principal Kenny Nicholson and Athletic Director Si Simmons have hit a home run.

A proven winner who has earned the respect of his players and fellow coaches, Tim Hawkins is a Sylva-Webster graduate who played three sports for the Golden Eagles. During his years at S-W, Hawkins had a chance to learn from the legendary Babe Howell, among the winningest prep football coaches in North Carolina history.

With his strong roots to both the school and Jackson County, Hawkins, a Wilmot native, should be just the person to return a sense of history and pride to the Mustang football program.

"If we had looked all over, we couldn't have found a better candidate," Principal Nicholson said. We agree. We applaud Tim's selection and wish him success in his effort to restore what once was a given for Sylva - a winning football team.
