Congratulations to county's fifth-graders - and their teachers

The results are in, and local fifth-graders have performed admirably on state-mandated tests that must be passed before students can be promoted to sixth grade.

Though early predictions indicated the number of students retained in fifth grade could be as high as 80, local students and their teachers cut that number in half through determination and hard work.

We're proud of them. With the pressure on, they met the challenge and conquered it.

We wish the students continued success as they move to sixth grade, and we thank all our fifth-grade teachers for the dedication and perseverance it took to lead their children through this important gateway.

Congratulations to them all.

Remembering those who fought for us

Monday is the day set aside to honor those who gave their lives while protecting this nation's freedom.

Memorial Day began in 1866 in Waterloo, N.Y., when druggist Henry Welles suggested showing honor to the patriotic dead of the Civil War by decorating their graves.

The first official recognition of Memorial Day was issued in 1868 by Gen. John Logan, first commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, establishing "Decoration Day," as it was then known.

Let's all join with communities across the nation Monday in remembering and honoring these brave men and women.

As we enjoy our day off, let's be mindful of the debt we owe to those who fought for us.
