Downtown will be place to be during 4th annual festival

This is definitely a time for celebration. It's spring, despite last week's wind and snow. And this year's Greening Up the Mountains festival is shaping up to be the best ever.

So let's shed those cold-weather doldrums and join the fun downtown this Saturday during the annual funfest sponsored by Sylva Partners in Renewal, Catch the Spirit of Appalachia, the Tuckasegee Alliance and the town of Sylva.

The festival includes music - all of it local - by Main Stage performers Smoky Mountain Drum'n Bass, Matt Stillwell, the Fiddling Dills Sisters, the Queen Family and Highlands Pipes and Drums. Another stage will feature area cloggers and other children's performances. In addition, downtown will come alive with more than 100 food and crafts vendors lining Main Street.

Everybody loves a parade, and we'll have one of those, too. WLOS television personality Bob Caldwell will be this year's grand marshal, and a special dove release will kick off the event.

New this year is "Ducks on the Tuck," a ducky derby planned and organized by local students to help their own. All proceeds will go to New Century Scholars, a program that ensures deserving students a shot at a college education. Winners will be announced at 3 p.m. by the Main Stage emcee, Lee Shannon. And, because of the festival's Earth Day roots, a clean air rally, sponsored by the Canary Coalition, will be held at 1 p.m.

Mountain heritage will not be forgotten. There will be home-canning and baked goods contests, and demonstrations of traditional crafts.

Greening Up the Mountains looks to be the kind of event that can make us all proud to say we're from Sylva.

Join us downtown Saturday - and join the fun.
