Jackson County Schools recently became one of a number of school systems in North Carolina to create charitable endowment funds through the N.C. Community Foundation. The schools have established both a permanent endowment fund and a pass-through account for private donations to enrich the local schools. The funds were made possible by two $5,000 gifts from Pepsi-Cola and Coca-Cola. Marsha Crites (left), senior associate with the N.C. Community Foundation, said, "Increasingly, public schools and other quasi-governmental organizations such as libraries and greenways are realizing that the public needs a tax-deductible and safe way to make gifts to supplement services tax dollars support. Community Foundations are excellent vehicles for such funds because they are tax-exempt organizations and use investment strategies to make all funds under their umbrellas grow." Superintendent Frank Burrell said another reason for the fund is to create scholarships for local students. For information on how to donate, contact David Steinbicker with the schools at 586-2311 or Crites at 586-4616.
