Cigarette causes blaze

Webster Enterprizes fire Herald photo by Rose Hooper

A carelessly tossed cigarette was mostly likely the cause of a fire last Friday at Webster Enterprises' Dillsboro facility, said Arlene Stewart, the company's director of operations. "It's clearly posted a 'No Smoking' area, and we've repeatedly coached our employees against smoking at this location," said Gene Robinson, Webster Enterprises executive director. With all the paper and recycling materials in and around the building, the potential for a really big fire was great, firefighters said. The Sylva Fire Department responded to the 3:47 p.m. alarm, with mutual aid provided by departments from Balsam, Cullowhee, Qualla and Savannah. The blaze caused structural as well as electrical damage, Stewart said.
