Hoover concluded his collegiate career with six catches for 83 yards. He carried 11 times for 47 times.
Shawn Snyder completed 19 of 28 passes for 289 yards. Michael Banks had six receptions for 89 yards.
Banks, who also returned two kickoffs for 32 yards, was named conference freshman of the week. Citadel's Maurice Murphy was the game's leading rusher with 74 yards on 16 attempts. Deon Jackson carried 14 times for 55 yards. Joe Call completed 10 of 19 passes for 112 yards. Dendrick Gamble's five catches totaled 94 yards. The winning touchdown came one play after the Bulldogs had tied the score with 3:34 on the clock. Gamble caught a 28-yard pass from Call, and Jackson ran for the conversion for a 17-17 tie. The 88-yard drive took just six plays, including a 48-yard pass from Call to Gamble. After the Snyder-to-Hoover TD pass, Citadel was stopped on downs at its 33. The Catamounts ran out the clock. WCU led 10-0 at halftime and had a good drive going after intermission by reaching the Bulldog 35. The threat ended when Kevin Howard picked off Snyder's pass at the 25. After forcing a punt, the Cats wasted little time getting on the board again. Snyder dumped off a screen pass to Hooks, who took the ball 70 yards for a score. Josh Jones kicked the extra point making it 17-0 with 8:25 to go in the third period. The Bulldogs got on the board with a 70-yard march in 14 plays. Highlights were a 10-yard run by Murphy and an eight-yard gain by Bradley Hall on fourth-and-one from the WCU 47. Hall scored from a yard out, and Nick Haas kicked the PAT cutting the gap to 17-7 with 1:28 remaining in the third quarter. The Bulldogs inched closer when WCU's Donnie Bryant mishandled a punt for a safety narrowing Western's lead to 17-9 with 13:36 left in the game. Citadel reached the WCU 29 following the free kick before being stopped on downs. The Bulldogs forced a punt, but Carlos Frank's fumbled was recovered by Randy Shaw giving the ball back to the Cats at the Citadel 32. The Bulldogs threatened early in the game by reaching the WCU eight, but Haas missed a 25-yard field goal. Following an exchange of punts, the Cats went up 3-0 with 10:53 to play in the half on a 41-yard field goal by Jones. A 15-yard pass from Snyder to Banks helped set up the kick. Western built the lead to 10-0 with 2:36 on the clock on an eight-yard run by Hoover and Jones' PAT. The 65-yard drive took six plays, including a 25-yard pass from Snyder to Lamont Williams. WCU's Lamont Ransby was the game's leading tackler with 10, and Jerrod Boone had eight. Travis Cunningham was in on eight tackles for the Bulldogs. |
