The American Cancer Society recently instituted a special recognition program for media partners who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to informing their community about the society's mission and fight against cancer.

Rose Hooper, feature editor for The Sylva Herald, was given the American Cancer Society's Southeast Division's Glass Sword Award in recognition of her outstanding media coverage and support of the American Cancer Society and their programs. The prestigious award is presented annually as part of the Media Awards Program.

The Media Awards Program was developed by the American Cancer Society in order to recognize media sources that have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the organization and its mission. The Sylva Herald was selected as the sole recipient of this year's award for the region, which includes 29 counties in North and South Carolina and Georgia.
"Rose Hooper and The Sylva Herald have been champions in keeping the local community informed about our lifesaving prevention and education programs, important patient service programs and our local fundraising events such as our Relay For Life," said Mary Nesbitt, American Cancer Society regional vice president.

The many area volunteers and supporters will honor her again in September at the annual American Cancer Society Donor's Reception for helping the American Cancer Society address the cancer concerns of Jackson County. The reception will be held in Asheville.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
