THE ANNUAL JACKSON COUNTY VETERANS DAY PARADE is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday in downtown Sylva. Participants will begin at Mark Watson Park and march down West Main Street. The parade will turn onto Mill Street and proceed back to Mark Watson. Traffic will be routed along Dillsboro Road and Municipal Drive during the parade.

CULLOWHEE VALLEY SCHOOL will hold its annual Veteran’s Day celebration on Friday. A breakfast honoring veterans will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the school cafeteria, followed by an assembly at around 9:15.

HARRAH’S CHEROKEE CASINO RESORT will offer veterans a free buffet meal at Chefs Stage Buffet from noon to 10 p.m. Monday. To receive a free meal, veterans are asked to bring proof of service, such as a valid military ID, VA card or discharge papers. Also, the Veterans Day Poker Tournament will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday. Buy-ins are $100, and add-ons are $20. All add-on proceeds support the Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post 143 Ladies Auxiliary.

HARRAH’S CHEROKEE CASINO hosted last weekend the 15th annual “3 Doors Down – The Better Life Foundation” charity events. Harrah’s Cherokee donated more than $482,000 in raffle and concert ticket sales, as well as in-kind donations to The Better Life Foundation. The foundation presented checks to the Cherokee Children’s Home and the Navy Seal Foundation. More 160 bikers participated in the motorcycle rides. Hundreds packed the rotunda for the silent auction, bidding on hot items like autographed guitars from Sammy Hagar to Alison Krauss. A highlight was a video call from U.S. troops stationed in Kuwait.

THE JACKSON COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY will host its annual silent auction and wine tasting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Papou’s Wine Shop in downtown Sylva. Brew Dawgz and their brats and hotdogs will be set up outside. Silent auction prizes of all sizes, values and descriptions, from jewelry to pottery to home decor to gift certificates for golf and local businesses will be available. There will be something for everyone’s holiday gift list. Bidding opens at 6 p.m. and closes at 8 p.m.. Wine tasting tickets are $15 and include five tastings, three red and two white. All of those proceeds go directly to ARF. Discounts of 10 percent on individual bottles of the tasting wines, and 20 percent on full-mixed cases, will be available.
