THE JACKSON COUNTY GREEN ENERGY PARK’S 11th annual Youth Arts Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15. There will be artist demonstrations in glass, metal, ceramics, paint, printmaking and more, as well as demonstrations in weaving, handbuilding with clay, wheel-thrown clay and more. ANDY SHAW FORD will host an event for United Christian Ministries of Jackson County Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For every test drive taken, $20 will be donated. 300 drivers are needed to meet Andy Shaw Ford’s goal. United Christian Ministries operates a food pantry, assists with basic necessities, past due utilities, rent and prescriptions and also provides household items such as dishes, sheets, blankets and towels and toiletries; soap, toothpaste, shampoo and deodorant. Sign- up occurs the day of the event, which is located at the dealership at 1231 E. Main St., across from Walmart, so just show up with your driver’s license and be prepared to drive. Only one driver per household. UCM will also be selling hot dogs with chili.

THE WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA CIVIL WAR ROUNDTABLE will feature the group’s president, Paul Turner, leading a discussion about Reconstruction. The meeting will be Sept. 10 at the Robinson Building on the Western Carolina University campus at 7 p.m. There will be social time in the lobby of the auditorium with light refreshments at 6:30 p.m.

DOGWOOD CRAFTER’S MONTHLY WORKSHOP on Thursday, Sept. 13, will feature the humble gourd taking center stage. Madge Sala, a long-time member of Dogwood, will be the instructor for this workshop which will focus on the techniques of gourd craft. Participants will make a gourd pendant that will be a unique accessory for themselves or to give as a gift. They will learn more about gourd art and preparation of the gourd for use in creative endeavors. The class will be held at the Dillsboro Masonic Lodge, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Cost is $6.
