NAMI APPALACHIAN SOUTH, the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, now offers two support groups. One group meets every Thursday from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church. This is a combination peer group for both individuals living with a mental illness and/or family and friends of a person with a mental illness. Call 828-526-9510 for more information. The second support group, the “Family/Caregivers” group, meets monthly on the first Tuesday of each month from 7 to 8 p.m., also at the church. This group is designed for family members/friends of someone living with a mental illness and will next meet at Tuesday, Jan. 5. Call 828-369-7385 for more information. Both of these groups provide confidential settings to gain insight and empathy; to learn coping strategies; and to share information about medications, research and services.

MURPHY

MURPHY MEDICAL CENTER will offer a free asthma education class on Monday, Jan. 4, to help patients, family members and caregivers understand what happens in the lungs during an asthma attack or flare up. Tips for better controlling asthma attacks will also be provided. The class will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Travis E. Green Conference Center, adjacent to the hospital lobby. Also, REGISTERED DIETICIAN SHANNON SUMMERS will be the featured speaker for the Center’s Ladies’ Night Out on Tuesday, Jan. 5. Summers will speak on “Dietary Lifestyle Changes and Weight Management” and the benefits of eating well to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The event, to be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at McGuire’s Millrace Farm, is open to all ladies age 13 and older, and door prizes donated by local merchants will be available.
