Recycling

Jackson County’s Recycle and Reduction Coordinator Kim Shuler will speak in the Community Room Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. It’s a truth universally acknowledged that recycling is important, however, recycling isn’t universal. What is the reason behind this? Shuler will explain the general recycling process for Jackson County and provide resources for recycling at your office, home, school and community. She’ll also talk about the composting process and how to get started. This program is free and open to the public.

Birds, owls

The Balsam Mountain Trust talks about birds and owls at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, in the Community Room. This installation of Wild Wednesdays is part of the Summer Learning Program. Anyone interested in the Summer Learning Program can register by coming to the Youth Services Desk on the first floor of the Library, or go to the link www.fontanalib.org/summer, or download the Read Squared app.

Birds

Tim Carstens brings his program Birds in your Backyard and Beyond at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 30, in the Community Room. In his own words, Carstens speaks about his program, “what I can do is show you some beautiful birds you can find in your backyard in Jackson County, in some local birding hot spots nearby and, if we have time, in some other places. Along the way I can show you some of the ways you can better find, observe and identify birds here and elsewhere”.

Carstens has lived in Western North Carolina since 1990. He was a librarian at Western Carolina University from 1990-2016. Since he retired from the library he has been able to spend more time hiking, paddling and indulging his passion for birdwatching and bird photography.

These programs are free and co-sponsored by the Friends of the Jackson County Public Library. For more information, call the library at 586-2016. The Jackson County Public Library is a member of Fontana Regional Library (www.fontanalib.org).
