City Lights Bookstore and The Jackson County Public Library have partnered for an event featuring David Gates and Tim Osment at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Community Room of the library. They will present Gates’ book, “The Way I See It,” a look at his life growing up in Appalachia, becoming blind, and the determination to succeed despite his many hardships. City Lights will have copies of “The Way I See It” on sale at the library.
The Mad Batter hosts two movies this week. “Boy Erased” is about the son of a small-town Baptist pastor who must overcome the fallout after being outed as gay to his parents. It shows at 6:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday). At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, the movie is “The Hate U Give,” about a young woman who is constantly switching between two worlds – the poor, mostly black neighborhood where she lives and the wealthy, mostly white prep school that she attends. Harry Potter fans will love “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” showing at 7 and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the UC Theater at WCU. Tickets are $2 for WCU students/$5 for everyone else. Popcorn and drinks are free.
