City Lights Bookstore has two author events planned.

Writer Meagan Lucas will appear in conversation with Benjamin Cutler and Andrew Clark at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The trio will discuss her debut novel “Songbirds and Stray Dogs.” Taylor Brown, author of “Gods of Howl Mountain” said Lucas is a brave new voice in Southern fiction and said, the book is “an unflinching portrait of motherhood, trauma and the family we make along the way.”

Lucas is a Canadian who found a home in the mountains. Born and raised on a small island in Northern Ontario, she now lives with her husband and their children in Hendersonville. She teaches English at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College and is the fiction editor at Barren Magazine.

Marly Youmans returns at 3 p.m. Saturday. A former Cullowhee resident, Youmans will present her new poetry collection “The Book of the Red King.” The book is a collection of connected poems telling the story of the mysterious Red King, the metamorphosing Fool, and the ethereal Precious Wentletrap. The book features illustrations by Welsh artist Clive Hicks-Jenkins.
