City Lights Bookstore welcomes back local author Brent Martin at 6:30 p.m. Friday. He will read from his new collection “The Changing Blue Ridge Mountains: Essays on Journeys Past and Present.” With his new book, Brent Martin guides the reader on a journey through history and the present to explore the concept of wilderness and change in Western North Carolina and what the future holds for the individuals and species who call those mountains home. Martin is a Western North Carolina local committed to wildlife preservation and bringing attention to the natural world all around us. Kathryn Kirkpatrick returns to City Lights on at 3 p.m. Saturday to read from her new poetry collection “The Fisher Queen: New and Selected Poems.” A scholar as well as a poet, Kirkpatrick currently serves as a professor at Appalachian State University. In the second installment of the Summer Evening in Webster series, Howard Allman will be reading four John Parris stories detailing the four seasons at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Allman will be accompanied by Bob Young performing Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons.’’ John Parris was a legendary Sylva writer who died in 1999. He is remembered for his “Roaming the Mountains” column that appeared in the Asheville Citizen-Times.
