Friends of the Arts

A note regarding Friends of the Arts from George H. Brown, Dean of the Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts:

It is an understatement to say we are all living through a challenging time. And challenges require imagination, dedication, and compassion to overcome – values that are part of the soul of the David Orr Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts.

David Orr Belcher, a true Friend of the Arts, passionately believed that all of us at Western Carolina University are in the business of changing lives. He believed, as so many of us do, in the transformational power of education and the arts, not just in terms of workforce development, but in the full compass of HUMAN Development. To paraphrase the great American Playwright Thornton Wilder, the Arts are the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being. And we all need this now, more than ever.

The Arts help us develop our self-awareness and social awareness. The Arts allow us to feel and show empathy for others. They create opportunities to give voice to the unheard and a space to share our common experiences.

The Arts give us the gift of seeing the world through someone else’s eyes. Music, Theatre, Dance, Film and the Visual Arts allow us to celebrate the full spectrum of our humanity, while, at the same time, empower us to reject and mourn the darkness of our inhumanity. Even when we are apart, the Arts bring us together. But now we need you to play your part. We need your help. We need you to help us help our students build a better world. We need you to help us change lives through the power of education and the arts.

We are asking you to donate to the Friends of the Arts so we may continue to serve the exceptional students of the David Orr Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts. Due to the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Friends of the Arts will not be able to hold our Gala Fundraising Event until sometime in 2021 – two years since our last fundraiser.

These students – the next generation of artists, teachers, and scholars – need your help. We humbly ask that you contribute now to the Friends of the Arts and help us help these young artists build a better world for us all.
