The Smoky Mountain High School Musical Theatre Department and Musical Theatre class bring “Legally Blonde, the Musical” to the stage for four shows this month.

The musical highlights the endeavors of Elle Woods (played by Erin Moore), a senior at UCLA who is suddenly dumped by her boyfriend, Warner (played by Chandler Hall), because he is going to Harvard after graduation and needs a “serious” girlfriend.

Elle and her friends Margot, played by Jessica Moody, Serena, played by Holland Raming, and Pilar, played by Kary McGoldrick, are shocked and begin to formulate a plan to get Elle into Harvard. They succeed and Elle runs into Warner and his new Harvard girlfriend, Vivienne, played by Kim Stehling, in the halls of Harvard. Elle begins to make her own way and her own friends

Her confidante is Paulette, played by Rachel Shaw, and her lawyer mentor and eventual love interest is Emmett, played by Wayne Lovedahl. Professor Callahan, played by Neil Trelles, and Brooke, played by Jamie DaCosta, keep things interesting in the courtroom scenes. These leading characters are supported by a cast of cheerleaders, Harvard students, Delta Nu’s and UCLA students who sing and dance their way into each scene.

“The musical follows the movie story, but also has a few fun and new twists,” said Linda Haggard, director of the play. “It will make you laugh and cry.”

The cast and crew are all part of the Musical Theatre class this semester at Smoky Mountain.

The show is under the direction of Haggard, accompanied by Anne Schwabland. The assistant director is Seth Kuehn, and the choreographer is Katy Elders.

The show is appropriate for all ages and the 72-member cast/crew hopes all of Jackson County will support their effort, Haggard said.

Show dates are at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13; at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14; and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15. All performances are at the Smoky Mountain Fine and Performing Arts Center on the Smoky Mountain campus. Tickets are $5 for all children and students of any age and $12 for adults.
