The acclaimed musical “Mamma Mia!” by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus will light up the Smoky Mountain High School Performing Arts stage May 17-19.

The production will be under the direction of Linda Haggard, along with choreographer Katy Elders, assistant director Seth Kuehn and musical assistant Anne Schwabland.

More than 60 million people worldwide have enjoyed the characters, the story and the music that make “Mamma Mia!” one of the most popular musicals in recent years. ABBA’s songs propel a tale of love and friendship that features a large cast, plenty of humor and dynamic dance numbers.

Set on a Greek island, the plot serves as a background for a wealth of ABBA songs. A young woman, Sophie Sheridan (Lindsey Stack), about to be married to Sky (Mitchell Russotti) discovers that any one of three men could be her father (Sam/Nathan Wade, Harry/Zach Lambert, Bill/Brad Arnold). Sophie and her friends Ali (Jamie Da Costa/Jessica Moody) and Lisa (Nyah Huddleston/Kim Stehling) plot to uncover the identity of her real dad after she invites them to her wedding without telling her mother, Donna (Holly Miller), who was once the lead singer of Donna and the Dynamos. In the meantime, Donna has invited her backup singers, Rosie (Emily Martin) and Tanya (Erin Moore).

Donna’s Girls, Featured Dancers, Island and Men’s Ensembles will offer music and dance to some of ABBA’s most famous hits, “Honey, Honey,” “Money, Money, Money,” “Mamma Mia,” “Dancing Queen,” “Super Trouper,” “S.O.S.,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “The Winner Takes It All” and “Waterloo.”

More than 100 performers from Jackson County Smoky Mountain District schools will adorn bright, fun and period costumes planned by Susan Karcher, costume director, to support the production.

Show times are Friday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, May 18, at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, May 19, at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for college students and $5 for children through high school students. Tickets can be purchased at the box office, which will be open one hour before each show in the lobby of the auditorium. Call Haggard at 586-2177 ext. 2750 to reserve tickets.

All four performances will be held in the Smoky Mountain High School Performing Arts auditorium.
