A term of Jackson County Superior Court convened March 29 at the Justice Center with Judge Brad Letts presiding.

Results of the term are listed below, with information obtained from records on file with the Jackson County Clerk of Court office. Defendants pleaded guilty unless indicated otherwise. In addition to dismissals, dispositions included:

In the lone jury trial, Joan Hooper Stearns, 65, Central Street, Sylva, was found not guilty of simple assault and assault by pointing a gun. The jury deliberated around 45 minutes.

Travis Lee Mathis, 27, Posey Blanton Road, Sylva, admitted to a probation violation, probation revoked and sentence of not less than eight nor more than 19 months activated, given credit for 120 days served.

Tori Shey Gunter, 33, Wolfetown Road, Cherokee, admitted to a probation violation, probation terminated, monies owed to become civil judgment.

Melinda Murphy Howell, 49, Wrights Creek Road, Cherokee, possess methamphetamine, placed on supervised probation for 12 months, ordered to pay fine of $25 and costs and obtain substance abuse assessment, given credit for 41 days served.

Terry Jay Webb, 41, Allen Street, Sylva, possess drug paraphernalia and solicit to possess cocaine, sentence of 45 days suspended for 12 months and placed on supervised probation on condition he pay fine of $25 and costs and obtain substance abuse assessment.

Eric York, 25, Thicket Lane, Sylva, admitted to three counts of probation violation, probation terminated, monies owed to become civil judgment.

Walter Lewis Underwood, 42, Zeb Alley Road, Cashiers, was found in violation of probation on two counts, on each count probation revoked and sentences of not less than five nor more than 15 months and not less than seven nor more than 18 months activated, sentences to run consecutively, given credit for 202 days served, substance abuse treatment, psychiatric and/or psychological counseling, work release and DART program recommended.

Michael Lee Kelley, 59, Franklin, possess with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver methamphetamine, sentence of not less than seven nor more than 18 months suspended for 24 months and placed on special supervised probation on condition he serve nine days active time, pay fine of $50 and costs and obtain substance abuse assessment, assigned to TASC, given credit for nine days served; possess with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver Schedule II substance, sentence of not less than seven nor more than 18 months suspended for 24 months and placed on supervised probation.

Tandy Moore Dyer, 38, Locust Creek Road, Sylva, possess drug paraphernalia, sentence of 90 days suspended for 12 months and placed on supervised probation on condition she pay fine of $25 and costs and obtain substance abuse assessment; possess methamphetamine, continued from term to term until April 2022.

William Lamar Wellham, 50, North Country Club Drive, Cullowhee, failure to report new address by sex offender, sentence of not less than 19 nor more than 32 months, given credit for 73 days served, ordered to pay costs, substance abuse treatment, psychiatric and/or psychological counseling, work release and DART program recommended.
