Two sessions of Jackson County District Court were held last week at the Justice Center with Judge Kaleb Wingate presiding.

A session mainly for traffic cases was held July 12, with a session for other cases July 13.

Results of the sessions are listed below, with information obtained from records on file with the Jackson County Clerk of Court office. Defendants pleaded guilty unless indicated otherwise. In addition to dismissals and infractions, dispositions included:

 

July 12

Ronald Jamal Billings, 28, Waynesville, larceny, sentence of 120 days suspended for 12 months and placed on supervised probation on condition he pay fine of $50 and costs and make restitution; injury to personal property, sentence of 29 days, given credit for 29 days served.

Barbara Renay Baker, 46, Wild Hog Ridge, Sylva, driving while impaired – level five, sentence of not less than nor more than 60 days suspended for 12 months and placed on unsupervised probation on condition she pay fine of $100 and costs, obtain substance abuse assessment, surrender driver’s license and perform 24 hours community service.

Brianna Amanda Powers, 31, Robbinsville, driving while license revoked, fined $25 and costs.

Scott Franklin Simpkins, 21, Indian Trail, driving after drinking by person under 21, sentence of 30 days suspended for 12 months and placed on unsupervised probation on condition he pay fine of $100 and costs and surrender driver’s license.

Matthew Ryan Swayngim, 23, Iceberg Lane, Sylva, driving while impaired – level five, sentence of not less than nor more than 60 days suspended for 12 months and placed on unsupervised probation on condition he pay fine of $100 and costs, obtain substance abuse assessment, surrender driver’s license and perform 24 hours community service.

Stephanie Watson, 42, Skyland Drive, Sylva, second-degree trespass, prayer for judgment continued on condition she pay costs.

Tansi Elaine Young, 41, Cherokee, admitted to failure to complete community service, sentence of 24 hours, given credit for 24 hours served.

David Ernest Frizzell, 42, Spaulding Drive, Sylva, waived a probable cause hearing and was bound over to Superior Court on three counts of statutory sex offense with child by an adult.

In a probable cause hearing, Christopher Ian Cotterman, 37, N.C. 107, Tuckasegee, was bound over to Superior Court on charges of kidnapping and break or enter a motor vehicle.

 

July 13

Mark Andrew Sweeney, 43, Monroe, Ga., was found guilty of simple assault, prayer for judgment continued from term to term on condition he pay costs.

Chasity Lynn Austin, 28, Homespun Road, Sylva, possess drug paraphernalia, continued to Oct. 4 for sentencing.

Michelle Renee Roberts, 50, Red Wing Vista, Whittier, possess drug paraphernalia, placed on supervised probation for 12 months, ordered to pay fine of $50 and costs and obtain substance abuse assessment.

Kevin Scott Watson, 28, East Sylva Circle, Sylva, possess drug paraphernalia, sentence of 45 days suspended for 18 months and placed on supervised probation on condition he pay costs; larceny by trick and driving while license revoked, sentence of 45 days suspended for 18 months and placed on supervised probation on condition he pay fine of $50 and costs, make restitution, obtain substance abuse assessment and not be on premises of Plaza Pawn, given credit for 27 days served.

Mark Stephen Bennett, 50, Pincushion Lane, Sylva, domestic violence protective order violation, sentence of 150 days suspended for 18 months and placed on supervised probation on condition he pay fine of $50 and costs and complete domestic violence intervention classes.

Juan Nicholas Ramirez, 29, Westridge Road, Sylva, pleaded no contest to child abuse, prayer for judgment continued from term to term on condition he pay costs.

Cody Allen Mintz, 29, Crakin Chestnut Lane, Sylva, admitted to a probation violation, probation extended for six months and ordered to comply with treatment recommendations within 60 days.

Keenan Edenfield, 42, Autumn Applause Drive, Cherokee, communicating threats and resisting public officer, sentence of 45 days suspended for 12 months and placed on unsupervised probation on condition he pay fine of $100 and costs, obtain substance abuse assessment, not be on premises of Harrah’s Cherokee Casino, perform 12 hours community service and have no contact with victims.

Nathan Kenneth Ellsworth, 20, Mills River, resisting public officer, continued to Dec. 20 for sentencing; driving after drinking by person under 21, sentence of 30 days suspended for 12 months and placed on unsupervised probation on condition he pay fine of $100 and costs, surrender driver’s license and obtain substance abuse assessment.

Stephen Bengivenga, 20, Manor Trace, Sylva, resisting public officer, sentence of two days, given credit for two days served, ordered to pay costs.

Chadwick Errol George, 47, Poplar Tree Lane, Whittier, larceny and plant conservation act violation, sentence of 120 days suspended for 12 months and placed on unsupervised probation on condition he pay fine of $200 and costs and have no contact with victims.

Roddy Leroy Crosgrove, 35, Liberty, disorderly conduct, sentence of 60 days suspended for 12 months and placed on unsupervised probation on condition he pay fine of $100 and costs and not be on premises of Harrah’s Cherokee Casino.

Isaiah Thomas Frady, 27, Camp Branch Road, Whittier, driving while impaired – level five, sentence of not less than nor more than 60 days suspended for 12 months and placed on unsupervised probation on condition he pay fine of $100 and costs, obtain substance abuse assessment, surrender driver’s license and perform 24 hours community service.

Jeffrey Allen Best, 32, Rufus Robinson Road, Dillsboro, was found in violation of probation on two counts, on each count probation revoked and sentences of 75 days activated and given credit for 37 days served, sentences to run consecutively.
