The first jury trail held in Jackson County Superior Court since the COVID-19 pandemic began resulted in a not guilty verdict last week.

Craig Alan Hambrick, 40, of Franklin was acquitted of charges of assault on a female and interfering with emergency communications.

The jury returned the verdict after a little more than two hours of deliberations. Several measures were in place during the trial and deliberations to allow for social distancing.

Judge Brad Letts presided at the court term, which convened Nov. 2 at the Justice Center.

Other results of the term are listed below, with information obtained from records on file with the Jackson County Clerk of Court office. Defendants pleaded guilty unless indicated otherwise. In addition to dismissals, dispositions included:

Shannon Dorian Lynn, 36, Franklin, had his case remanded to District Court on a charge of driving while impaired – level five.

Billy Joe Riddle, 39, Clyde, assault inflicting serious injury on a detention employee and assault on a government official/employee, sentence of not less than 10 nor more than 21 months, given credit for 114 days served, ordered to pay costs, substance abuse treatment, psychiatric and/or psychological counseling, work release and DART program recommended.

Joseph Daniel Jacobs, 28, Gospel Drive, Sylva, admitted to a probation violation, probation extended for 12 months, ordered to have drug screenings for three months.

Joshua Craig Cook, 29, Summit Hill Drive, Sylva, larceny from the person, breaking and/or entering and larceny after break/enter, sentence of not less than nine nor more than 20 months, ordered to pay costs, make restitution of $1,300 and have no contact with victims, substance abuse treatment, psychiatric and/or psychological counseling, work release and DART program recommended.

Ralph E. Wishon Jr., 48, Bluff City, Tenn., larceny, sentence of not less than eight nor more than 19 months suspended for 60 months and placed on supervised probation on condition he pay fine of $100 and costs, make restitution of $23,030, have no contact with victim and obtain substance abuse assessment.

Christopher Todd Jones Jr., 34, Cagle Branch Road, Sylva, breaking and/or entering, larceny after break/enter and assault with a deadly weapon, sentence of not less than 10 nor more than 21 months, given credit for 211 days served, ordered to pay costs, make restitution and have no contact with victim, substance abuse treatment, psychiatric and/or psychological counseling, work release and DART program recommended; larceny of motor vehicle and possess phone/communication device by inmate, sentence of not less than 10 nor more than 21 months suspended for 24 months and placed on supervised probation on condition he pay fine of $200 and costs, make restitution of $1,837.98, have no contact with victim and obtain substance abuse assessment, assigned to electronic house arrest for 120 days.

Dora Alvarado, 49, Toohow Road, Whittier, possess drug paraphernalia and failure to appear, sentence of 120 days suspended for 12 months and placed on special supervised probation on condition she serve two days active time, pay fine of $50 and costs and obtain substance abuse assessment, given credit for two days served.

Lynsey Marie Cogdill, 36, Waynesville, possess drug paraphernalia, sentence of 120 days suspended for 12 months and placed on supervised probation on condition she pay fine of $25 and costs and obtain substance abuse assessment; possess methamphetamine, continued from term to term.

Tyson Dwayne Wiggins, 38, Charlotte, attempted traffic in heroin, sentence of not less than 42 nor more than 63 months, substance abuse treatment, psychiatric and/or psychological counseling, work release and DART program recommended; maintain vehicle/dwelling/place for controlled substance, sentence of not less than eight nor more than 19 months suspended for 18 months and placed on supervised probation on condition he pay fine of $25 and costs and obtain substance abuse assessment.

Robert Justin Steele, 34, East Hall Heights, Sylva, admitted to a probation violation, probation revoked and sentence of not less than 10 nor more than 21 months activated, substance abuse treatment, psychiatric and/or psychological counseling and work release recommended; also admitted to two other counts of probation violation, on one count assigned to electronic house arrest for not less than 120 nor more than 180 days; on another count probation extended 30 months.

James Adam Brooks 37, Mimosa Lane, Sylva, possess methamphetamine, sentence of not less than 12 nor more than 24 months, substance abuse treatment, psychiatric and/or psychological counseling, work release and DART program recommended.

Ida Cission Trull, 43, Onieda Lane, Cullowhee, possess methamphetamine, sentence of not less than four nor more than 14 months suspended for 12 months and placed on supervised probation on condition she pay fine of $25 and costs and obtain substance abuse assessment.

Amber Fiona Freeman, 25, Bryson City, possess drug paraphernalia, sentence of 45 days suspended for 12 months and placed on supervised probation on condition she pay fine of $25 and costs and obtain GED and substance abuse assessment; possess methamphetamine, continued from term to term.
