A Western Carolina University police officer escaped serious injury
when she was involved in an accident last week on Edgewater Road.
Angela McMahan was treated and released at Harris Regional Hospital,
according to Trooper Steve Allred of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
The wreck occurred around 11:55 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Allred
said McMahan was in pursuit of another vehicle when her car entered
a long righthand curve, ran off the road and went into the Tuckaseigee
River.
Gene McAbee, WCU's director of police, said McMahan's pursuit of
a reckless driver began near the bridge crossing the river on old
N.C. 107 in Cullowhee. The other vehicle got away.
McMahan was able to get out of her vehicle and to the side of the
river where she received assistance up the bank from Harrell Ingram,
a nearby resident, McAbee said.
"We're certainly appreciative of what he did along with the
deputy who arrived shortly thereafter as well as the (Jackson County)
Rescue Squad and the (Cullowhee) Fire Department," McAbee said. |
