Waynesville dispute causes accident

Sylva firefighters and Jackson County Rescue Squad workers clean up after a three-car accident on U.S. 23/74 near the Comfort Inn around 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 12. The incident was the result of an altercation in Waynesville between Mary Ellen Francis Shepherd and Stephanie Young Conner, said Trooper Steve Allred of the N.C. Highway Patrol. Traveling west towards Sylva, Shepherd's 2002 Ford Escort struck Conner's 1999 Ford Mustang, then crossed the median and struck a 2001 Jeep Cherokee driven by Benjamin Lindgrove Pait, Allred said. While Conner and her passenger were uninjured, both Shepherd and Pait were taken to Harris Regional Hospital. Pait was treated and released; Shepherd was transferred to Mission Hospitals in Asheville, where she was listed in fair condition as of Monday. According to a report filed by Allred, both Shepherd and Conner have been charged with careless and reckless driving. – Herald photo by Rose Hooper
