Officially celebrated Nov. 11, Veterans Day this year marks the
third consecutive holiday with a nation at war
.
A veterans flag dedication Sunday, Nov. 9, at Tuckasegee Baptist
Church, will kick off local observances of Veterans Day.
Organizers stress that Sunday's event is not just for church members,
but for the entire community and especially for veterans.
"We are dedicating a new American flag and flag pole in memory
and honor of all veterans," said Beverly Turrentine.
The service, which begins a 10:45 a.m., will include a bagpipe
player and a trumpet player. A covered-dish dinner will follow
in the fellowship hall with the church providing meat and drinks.
Fairview School will hold its third annual Veterans Day assembly
program Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 9:45 a.m.
All veterans and those currently serving in the military are invited
to attend the assembly and luncheon afterwards as honored guests.
"It's a time to honor our veterans and to help the students
be aware of their sacrifices and contributions," said organizer
Frankie Harris.
Highlights will include music by the school chorus and the seventh-and-eighth-grade
band, a flag presentation by the Webster Boy Scouts, student speeches
and a recitation by Howard Allman. Featured speaker will be Jackson
County Commissioners' Chairman Stacy Buchanan.

Gold Star Mothers mothers whose sons or daughters have
lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces
will be honored guests as Western Carolina University holds its
third annual Veterans Day observance at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11.
Sponsored by the campus organization WCU Veterans and Friends,
the event will be held on the lawn in front of the University
Center.
President Woodrow Wilson first used the term "Gold Star Mothers"
shortly after World War I to describe American mothers who had
lost a son or daughter in the war.

Summit Charter School in Cashiers has scheduled its program for
1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12.
Opening color guard ceremonies will be presented by VFW Post 10685
of Glenville and American Legion Post 104. Five Legion members
will perform the flag-folding ceremony.
Music will include God Bless America on flute and close with Taps
on trumpet. Several military vehicles will be on display.
Veterans have been invited to the event and to visit with students
in the classrooms after the ceremony.
