Vandals go on brick-throwing spree

By Rose Hooper

"The vandalism was so extensive someone knows something," said Jackson County Sheriff Jimmy Ashe about a recent rash of bricks thrown through windows of area businesses.

County wide, 11 cases from Dillsboro to Cullowhee were investigated while five cases were investigated within the Sylva town limits.

"Collectively, the county and the town are offering a $500 reward leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible," said Ashe.

The sheriff said he believed the vandal(s) took the bricks from a near-by construction site.

"We think the brick theft occurred around 2 a.m. Monday at the Bojangles site near Wal-Mart," said Detective John Buchanan with the Sylva Police Department.

In Sylva, bricks were thrown through the window at Skyview Satellite and through a new Dodge pick-up truck at Western Carolina Chrysler Dodge, Buchanan said.

In Dillsboro, where bricks were thrown at the Golden Carp and the Apron Shop, private automobiles also sustained broken windows.

"We've been open since 1985 and this is the first time anything like this has happened to us," said Enloe Market Place owner Reg Moody.

"We had come in early to decorate for Christmas – this sure takes away your Christmas spirit," said his wife, Judy Moody.

At Dillsboro Supply owner John Clark said, "They broke into the little building at the parking lot and took my dad's briefcase. It was full of pictures and mementos and he walked the railroad track looking for where they might have dumped them. He never found anything."
