Volunteer Irene Hooper reads an e-mail from Sgt. John McCary,
son of Jackson County School Superintendent Mack McCary, to students
at Scotts Creek School. Sgt. McCary is with a military intelligence
unit attached to 1st Brigade of the 1st Infantry stationed in
Baghdad, Iraq. As part of the Pride Team enrichment program, the
seventh- and eighth-graders have coordinated a Support Our Troops
project and are collecting care packages for members of the local
N.C. National Guard's 210th Military Police currently in Baghdad.
"Most of the students know somebody like Levi Woodring who
has a relative serving over there," said school social worker
Sharon Fish, who invited the second-grader to the session. Woodring's
father, Kenneth, is with the 210th. As part of the project, the
students have also written letters to the soldiers. "I told
them about being a cheerleader and what was happening here in
sports," said Courtney Franklin. Hooper, a member of the
Golden Age senior writing class, helps with the students' writing
skills. The students are distributing a list of items to send
in the packages and invite the public to help. Superintendent
McCary has agreed to pay postage for the boxes, Fish said. From
