Last month the Jackson County Board of Commissioners
appointed a task force to study the viability of a joint library
with the county and Southwestern Community College to be located
on the SCC campus.
The new task force will hold a meeting next Tuesday, Oct. 28,
at noon at the Justice and Administration Center.
"Much of the work on this subject had already been done by
a task force comprised of personnel from both SCC and the Fontana
Regional Library," said Joe Rossano, a member of the newly-appointed
task force.
The first group met for nine months and evaluated various concerns
associated with a joint venture, issuing their report in October
last year.
"Although the report was favorable, the commissioners felt
there were unanswered questions and further study was needed.
Each commissioner appointed a member from his respective district
to serve on this new task force," said Rossano, who lives
in Forest Hills.
If it is decided that a joint library is feasible then the commissioners
will work with the town of Sylva, the Build Our Library Downtown,
and others interested in having a library downtown, he said.
"Our task force feels that community involvement is a critical
part of its decision and we need to hear from the citizens of
Jackson County. Our meetings are open to the public," Rossano
said.
In addition to Oct. 28, meetings have been set for Monday, Nov.
10, and Tuesday, Nov. 25, at the Justice and Administration Center
from noon until 2 p.m. A question and answer meeting is planned
for Monday, Nov. 17 at 7:00 p.m. in courtroom 2 of the center.
Minutes from the meetings will be posted at the SCC and Jackson
County libraries and will also be available from the task force
secretary Don Williamson whose e-mail address is donjw@earthlink.net.
Rossano's e-mail address is redford67@aol.com. Other members of
the task force are John Bunn, Diane Schallock (m.schallock@mchsi.com)
and Linda Young (young35@verizon.net).
