SM wrestlers open season with victory

Smoky Mountain's wrestling team opened its season last Thursday with a 60-18 victory over Hiwassee Dam in a match not on the original schedule.

Recording first-period pins for the Mustangs were Mason Neff (112), James Foree (145), Brenden Ferguson (152), Richard Sitton (171) and Kris Lehman (189).

Heavyweight Art Auville pinned his opponent in the second period, and Nick Woodard came away with a third-period pin at 125.

Winning by forfeit were Michael Cox (119), Ben Wilkes (130), Will McCoy (135) and J.P. Hadas (140).

"We've got 20 or 22 kids out, but we're very young," Coach Tom Sargent said. "We've got a nucleus of five or six guys with experience, but six or seven were on the mat for the first time (against Hiwassee Dam)."

He noted the only three seniors are Cox, Lehman and John Clark, who did not compete against the Eagles due to an ankle injury.

The remainder of the schedule is as follows:

Dec. 2 - at Christ School; 4 - Mountain Heritage; 6 - at Chase Tournament; 11 - at Andrews; 13 - Bearcat Challenge at Hendersonville; 15 - at Erwin; 19 - at Swain; 22-23 - at Cary Invitational Tournament.

Jan. 3 at Hayesville Tournament; 6 - Franklin; 9 - at Roberson; 13 - Enka and Andrews; 15 - Hayesville; 16 - at Asheville; 20 - at North Buncombe; 23 - East Henderson; 24 - Far West Tournament at Robbinsville; 27 - Tuscola; 30-31 - Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament at Erwin.
