SMHS starts semester with new space

Smoky Mountain High School receptionist Deeann Brooks helps seniors, from left, Jewel Petrilli, Andrea Williams, Zae Cooper and Brandy James in the school's new administrative offices Tuesday (Jan. 6) during the students' first day back to school. Construction workers finished the offices during winter break and began work on a new front lobby, which will feature a 25-foot cathedral ceiling and is expected to be finished this summer. Re-routed to class through a new entrance in the media center, students found their way to their post-Christmas exams "pretty smoothly," said Brooks, who spent the morning hooking up her computer and adjusting to her new desk. Though construction crews hit power lines the day before, shutting off power to the building and setting off the school's fire alarm, SMHS was ready for business by the time students arrived due to the efforts of Asheville Maintenance workers, said Alex Bell, interim principal. The offices formerly occupied by administrative staff will house the school's guidance department, giving them more room and privacy. - Herald photo by Carey King
