Funds available to pay for sewage systems

The N.C. Clean Water Trust Fund has made $400,000 available to the Jackson County Department of Public Health to assist low-to-moderate income residents of Jackson County in installing or repairing septic systems.

Families who fall below 80 percent of the median family income and who own their own property are eligible for a "deferred loan" for an amount up to $3,500 for installation/repairs to septic system.

A "deferred loan" can be made to any property owner who agrees to remain in the house for a specified period of time known as the "recapture period." This time depends on the amount of the loan.

The loan is "forgiven" after the applicable recapture period is satisfied. No lien is placed against the property of those who qualify for a deferred loan.

Low interest loans can also be made to families who are more than 80 percent of the State Median Income.

The terms of these loans are 3-5 percent interest, not to exceed a term of 10 years. A lien will be placed against the property of those who receive a low-interest loan.

Applicants will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis and will be approved or denied upon verification of the income guidelines.

These monies are available only until Dec.31. Any repair or installation must be completed prior to Dec. 31 to receive this funding.

The state Clean Water Trust and the local health department are committed to assisting in the clean up of the residential sewage discharges in Jackson County. If you have either a direct sewage discharge or a failing septic system, call Belinda Allison at 586-8994, ext. 257, for additional information.
