Snow
that lightly blanketed downtown Sylva early Dec. 19 was enough
to cancel school in Jackson County, allowing local students to
start their Christmas vacation a day early. The missed day caused
Smoky Mountain High School's second exam day to be rescheduled
to Tuesday, Jan. 6, when SMHS students will take their second-
and fourth-period exams. The delay also means that textbooks will
not be distributed at SMHS Friday, Jan. 2, and Monday, Jan 5,
as previously announced. While snow was light in Sylva, residents
in Balsam reported up to 8 inches Friday, with another 2 inches
falling that evening. Some 6 inches fell in the Norton area and
Canada community accumulations were from 4 to 6 inches. - Herald
