Descendants of confederate veteran Montreville B. Allison joined
members of the Sylva Sons of Confederate Veterans camp, the Jackson
Rangers, at Old Savannah Cemetery Dec. 14 to place a military
marker on the grave of Lt. Allison of the 25th and 62nd North
Carolina Troops.
About a dozen Allison family members and an equal contingent of
rangers braved cold winds and threatening weather to honor this
North Carolina veteran and recognize his confederate service with
a military marker issued by the U.S. government.

A
rifle salute by the 25th North Carolina re-enactors color guard
highlighted a Dec. 14 ceremony when descendants of confederate
veteran Montreville B. Allison joined members of the Sylva Sons
of Confederate Veterans camp, the Jackson Rangers, at Old Savannah
Cemetery to place a military marker on Allison's grave.
The event was witnessed and finalized with a rifle salute and
the playing of taps by members of the 25th North Carolina re-enactors
color guard.
"These types of activities lie at the heart of the mission
of the Sons of Confederate Veterans that the deeds and sacrifices
of their forebears will be memorialized for future generations,"
said commander Mike Parris of Dillsboro.
Allison, a life-long resident of Jackson County, was born June
16, 1838, to Jack and Rebecca Sherill Allison. Prior to his military
service he married Martha Jane Wilson on Oct. 26, 1859.
When war came to North Carolina, he enlisted as a sergeant May
30, 1861, in Company B of the 25th N.C. Infantry; he transferred
to Company H of the 62nd N.C. infantry in the spring of 1863.
During his service he was captured at Cumberland Gap on Sept.
9, 1863. He was held in the following prisons: Johnson's Island,
Pt. Lookout, Charleston, Ft. Pulaski and Ft. Delaware, where he
was released on oath on June 12, 1865.
After the war he returned home where he farmed and raised his
family until his death on May 3, 1919.
His son, Thomas Bragg Allison, was a successful merchant in Dillsboro.
