A man wounded in a shootout with police is facing numerous charges
and has been transferred to the hospital at Central Prison in
Raleigh, according to Sylva Police Chief Jeff Jamison.
Harold Leo McVay III, 34, of Sylva, had been in an Asheville hospital
since the Oct. 19 incident on Magnolia Street. He was taken by
ambulance to Raleigh on Monday. Jamison said McVay was accompanied
by deputies Chip Hall and Donnie Allen of the Jackson County Sheriff's
Office.
Charges against McVay include: eight counts of assault with a
firearm on a law enforcement officer and one count each of attempted
murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and discharging
a firearm in the city limits, Jamison said.
Bond has been set at $505,000.
The incident began when Police Officer Shannon Ashe responded
to a call of a man shooting a gun on Magnolia Street. After Ashe
arrived, he was shot by McVay, who ran to his nearby residence
starting a standoff of about an hour.
Ashe was wearing a bullet proof vest and escaped serious injury.
He was kept overnight for observation at Harris Regional Hospital.
Sheriff's Deputy Matt Helton negotiated with McVay, but when negotiations
broke down McVay became aggressive and made a threatening move
toward officers, Jamison said.
At that point Helton and another deputy, John Fox, fired at McVay,
Jamison said.
