A John Parris Christmas

Tina Evans, left, on guitar, strummed mountain Christmas carols as Louise Bedford read Oranges Mean Christmas to Old Timers, written by the late John Parris. The Dec. 21 program at Webster United Methodist Church, organized by Joe Rhinehart, was a tribute to Sylva writer and native Parris, who died in 1999. "Christmas was always a special time for John and his wife, Dorothy, and Sunday's program featured local residents reading several of his best Christmas stories," said Rhinehart. Rose Hooper of Locust Creek read The Christmas Bush, Howard Allman read The Babe in the Manger, Jimmy Butler read A Christmas Long Ago and Robert Hall closed the program as he read Of Chimes and the Gift of Life. During the program traditional Christmas carols were played by Linda Stewart of Webster on piano and Charles Shuler of Caney Fork on guitar. The event was sponsored by the Webster Historical Society. - Herald photo by Rose Hooper
