Breaking ground for new $3.2 million DSS building

Officials broke ground Tuesday (Dec. 9) for the new Jackson County Department of Social Services Building, which will be located on N.C. 116 across from the N.C. Department of Transportation Division 14 headquarters. The contract totals $3.2 million, with 65 percent of that amount to come from state funds, Jackson County Commissioners' Chairman Stacy Buchanan said during the 4 p.m. groundbreaking. The 24,000-square-foot building will have space for 55 employees, with room for expansion. Architect is Donza Mattison with McMillan Smith & Partners of Spartanburg, S.C., and Western Builders will be the general contractor.
