A traffic stop by officers with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office
just before midnight on Tuesday, Oct. 7, led to four people being
arrested on drug-related charges.
Sheriff Jimmy Ashe said it also resulted in the largest cash seizure
of drug-related funds in county history.
Officers seized more than of $100,000 in cash as well as powdered
cocaine, crack cocaine, marijuana and assorted firearms, according
to the sheriff.
Roy Eugene Bumgarner, 47, of Holden Trailer Park, Cullowhee, is
charged with two counts of possession with intent to sell/deliver
crack cocaine, two counts of possession of cocaine, two counts
of possession of marijuana and two counts of trafficking in cocaine
along with one count each of possession of drug paraphernalia,
sale and delivery of marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for a controlled
substance and trafficking in marijuana, Ashe said.
Bumgarner was released after posting $50,000 bond.
Jackson County Sheriff Jimmy Ashe displays items seized as
the result of four arrests made last week on drug-related charges.
He said a cash seizure of more than $100,000 was the largest in
county history. Also confiscated were crack and powered cocaine,
marijuana and assorted firearms.
Charges listed by Ashe against three others are
as follows:
John Douglas Smith, 40, Hayfield Road, Sylva driving while
license revoked, possession of crack cocaine and possession of
marijuana.
Kimberly Allison Tilley, 30, Masterpiece Drive, Cullowhee
possession of crack cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Melissa A. Nesbett, 24, Cullowhee possession of drug paraphernalia
and possession of marijuana.
Smith has posted a $3,600 bond while Tilley and Nesbett have both
posted $3,000 bonds.
"We feel this has placed a dent in the drug problem in Jackson
County which is my sole intention," Ashe said.
The sheriff said Smith was driving the vehicle with Bumgarner
and Tilley as passengers when the traffic stop occurred near Little
Savannah Road. He said a search of the car revealed a concealed
weapon and crack cocaine.
The three occupants were taken into custody and officers with
the Sheriff's Office and State Bureau of Investigation obtained
a search warrant for Bumgarner's residence, where Nesbett was
taken into custody, according to the sheriff.
Agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency and a K-9 from the Franklin
Police Department assisted in the investigation, Ashe said.
"This is a continuation of cooperative efforts between law
enforcement agencies in combatting the drug problem in Western
North Carolina," he said.
