"The
response was overwhelming," said Lois Danner, who coordinated
the Jackson County employees drive to prepare a Christmas box
for each of the 118 men and nine women of the 210th National Guard
unit serving in Iraq. "Not only did the employees respond, but
so did the entire community," she said, as she mailed the last
of the boxes Friday, Nov. 21. "We ended up with 207 boxes," said
Register of Deeds Joe Hamilton, center, whose office served as
the drop-off and packaging headquarters. Sylva Postmaster Steve
Allen, left, tallied the total mailing cost of $1,132. "In addition
to the much-needed items, like handi-wipes, we received enough
monetary donations to cover the postage and to buy phone cards
and 15 already-decorated Christmas trees which we included in
the boxes," said Danner.
