"We've
got lots of boxes to fill," said Lois Danner, coordinator
of Jackson County employees' Operation 210th Christmas Boxes.
With 118 men and nine women of the 210th National Guard unit serving
in Iraq, the exact number is 127. "That's for each member,
not just those from Jackson County," said Danner, deputy
register of deeds. "We did not want to leave anybody out."
Sylva Post Office donated the boxes, which Register of Deeds Joe
Hamilton described as "wide and deep you can fit a
lot in them." Donations from the 362 county employees are
already coming in, said Danner, and local dentists have donated
a large supply of dental products, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste
and dental floss. A list is circulating of items needed, including
Chapstick, whimsical Band-Aids, phone cards, scented candles,
snack packs, gum, hand lotion, disposable cameras, foot powder
and heavy-duty socks. "Anybody can donate; you don't have
to be a county employee. We need all the help we can get,"
Danner said. Items can be taken to the Register of Deeds office
by Nov. 14. Donations of money for postage are also needed, as
are volunteers on Nov. 15, the planned day to finish all the boxes.
