TWSA rates to increase 10 percent

By Rose Hooper

With no public at their public hearing or meeting, Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority board of directors easily passed a proposed rate increase.

The average 10 percent increase will go into effect July 1.

Meeting Tuesday, the board agreed that basic metered water and sewer rate for residential service be raised from $11.55 to $12.75. The commercial rate will be raised from $13.25 to $14.60.

That's the flat basic rate for up to 2,500 gallons. Usage rate will increase from $1.75 to $2 for 2,500-100,000 gallons and from $1.90 to $2.25 for use of more than 100,000 gallons.

Unmetered sewer rates for residential use will increase from $13.75 to $20, while the Commercial I rate will change from $16.50 to $25. The Commercial II rate will increase from $66 to $80, Commercial III from $165 to $200, and Commercial IV from $275 to $325.

The board also approved fees and charges for services as follows:
- Relocation of meter $300 or $500, depending on size;
- Meter size increase will be treated as a new tap fee;
- One-day use of a hydrant will be $50 non-refundable plus consumption at residential single-family rates; over one day will include a $100 deposit;
- Disconnect/reconnect fee $40;
- Damage to or tampering with water system will be charged cost of repairs plus $100 minimum fine;
- Crossing road (punch), $175; cutting road, $325; crossing road, four or more lanes, will be actual cost;
- Fire line annual charges will be $175 for 4-inch, $225 for 6-inch and $400 for 8-inch;
- Additional meter $250 and late fee, if not paid by the 15th of the month, will be 10 percent.

On a recommendation by board member Marion Jones, TWSA went on record in support of the county's proposed soil erosion and sedimentation control ordinance. (See related story page 1A.)

"We're in the water business, and we need to do what we can to protect the county's water supply," Jones said in making his recommendation.
