Fleck keys Lady Cats to victory over Elon

April Fleck scored 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds leading Western Carolina's women's basketball team to a 71-65 non-conference victory Dec. 6 at Elon.

Laura Echols added 17 points for the Lady Cats (5-3).

Loretta Lawson paced the Lady Phoenix with 21 points while Anestha Blakeney had 10 points and eight boards.

The first half saw 11 lead changes and five ties before WCU grabbed a 34-28 lead at intermission thanks to 12 points by Echols.

Elon went up by four when Blakeney layed in two of her 10 points with 13:29 to play.

The Lady Cats took the lead for good at 47-46 on two free throws by Katie Scott with 8:36 on the clock. WCU's Janetta Heggins handed out four assists, and Christy Blackwell came up with four steals.

Western shot 44.6 percent from the floor while Elon made just 32.4 percent of its field goal tries.

The Lady Cats had a 48-38 rebounding advantage.

WCU committed 22 turnovers, and the Lady Phoenix had 14.

Elon's Jayme Chikos dished out nine assists.

Completing the WCU scoring were Heggins with eight, Scott with seven, Marsha McGillivary, Kris Kent and Tiffany Hamm all with five, and Blackwell with three.

Western's next game will be Dec. 21 at UNC-Asheville.
