Fleck sets steals record as Lady Cats top Appalachian |

The Western Carolina women's basketball team finished the regular season on a high note. Saturday with an 80-74 Southern Conference victory over Appalachian State.
April Fleck, playing her final game in the Ramsey Center, had six steals to set the school record in that category with 240. Laura Echols led the Lady Cats (13-14, 7-11) with 28 points and nine rebounds. Also scoring in double figures were Janetta Heggins with 14, Tiffany Hamm with 12, and Fleck with 11. The 13 wins are the most for the program since the 1988-89 team went 13-15. Natasha Lettsome paced the Lady Mountaineers with 18 points. She played just 20 minutes due to foul trouble. Laura Edwards finished with 14, Ashleigh Fuller netted 11 and Aisha Bryant had 10. A pair of free throws by Echols gave Western the lead for good, 30-28, with 3:57 remaining in the half. The margin was 37-31 at intermission. ASU cut the gap to 51-50 at the 11:16 mark but could never take the lead. Led by Rachel Griffin's 10 rebounds, Appalachian dominated the boards 52-36. Echols had nine for the Lady Cats. Western countered the rebounding deficit by shooting 45.6 percent from the floor compared to ASU's 38.6 percent. Fleck directed the offense by handing out six assists. Appalachian's Jaymi Wilson had four assists and four steals. |

The Lady Mounties committed 28 turnovers while Western had 23.
Completing the WCU scoring were Marsha McGillivary with seven, Christy Blackwell with five, Kris Kent with two and Katie Scott with one. |
