Western women defeat Davidson for season's first victory at home

Western Carolina's women's basketball team put four players in double-figures and shot 53.2 percent from the field en route to a 91-60 win over Davidson Saturday at the Ramsey Center. The win was the Lady Cats' first this season at home after six losses and improved their record to 9-12 overall and 3-9 in the Southern Conference.

Marsha McGillivary led the attack with a career-high 21 points on eight of 11 field goal shooting. Tiffany Hamm and Laura Echols added 18 and 17 points, respectively, while Janetta Heggins had 13.

Echols pulled down 10 rebounds leading WCU to a 51-37 advantage on the boards.

April Fleck scored eight points, claimed nine boards and made three steals. The three steals put Fleck into second on the WCU career steals list with 221 surpassing Judy Green.

The Lady Cats came out of the blocks hot, racing to a 25-4 lead midway through the first half. They pushed the advantage to as many as 23 with 7:53 remaining in the half, but Davidson cut the gap to 40-31 at the break.

WCU didn't let up in the second half, building the advantage to 18 with 16:46 on the clock. The lead was never below 20 points from the 11:18 mark and not below 30 the final minute and a half.

The Lady Wildcats were limited to 31.3 percent shooting for the game.

Janna Magette scored 17 points for Davidson. Kim Taylor and JoAnne Hassel both finished with 10 points apiece.

Western's Christy Blackwell dished out eight assists.

Robyn Fleweloling was Davidson's top rebounder with eight.

Completing the WCU scoring were Kris Kent with six, Blackwell with four, Nicole Loggins with three and Jackie Stepp with one.

Western committed 19 turnovers, and Davidson had 17.

The Lady Cats dropped a 78-61 decision Jan. 30 at Furman.

Kim Lawrence paced the Lady Paladins with 15 points, and Tara Charles had 10.

Blackwell netted 12 points for WCU, and McGillivary finished with 10.

Furman owned the game and jumped to a 42-22 halftime advantage. The margin hovered around the 20-point mark in the second half and reached 27 with 3:29 to go in the game.

Furman owned the boards 59-35. Leading the way was Leitra Young with nine rebounds. Echols and Fleck topped WCU with six each.

The Lady Paladins shot 42.3 percent from the floor while Western hit just 30.9 percent of its field goal tries.

Furman turned the ball over 21 times, and the Lady Cats had 15 miscues.

Rounding out the WCU scoring were Fleck with nine, Echols and Hamm with eight each, Katie Scott with six, Kent and Heggins with three apiece and Stepp had two.

Western was scheduled to play Wofford at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Results were not known at Herald press time. Road games are slated with Chattanooga at 4 p.m. Saturday and Georgia Southern at 7 p.m. Monday.
