Lady Cats fall to UNC-G in SC basketball action

Western Carolina's women's basketball team lost 67-60 Saturday in Southern Conference action at UNC-Greensboro.

UNC-G (7-3, 2-0) remained undefeated in the conference despite connecting on just 35.1 percent of its field goal tries. That was offset by forcing 30 turnovers while committing 16, and shooting 73.3 percent from the line while the Lady Cats (6-4, 0-2) were just 59.1 percent on free throws.

Jessica Williams scored 19 points for the Lady Spartans, and Katie DelCampo added 11.

Western's Laura Echols had 21 points and 11 rebounds.

UNC-G led 30-27 at halftime and used a 15-4 run over a 4:02 span for a 13-point lead, 58-45 at the 5:46 mark. Nicole Murray scored two layups and a three-pointer during the spurt, and WCU came no closer than seven the rest of the game. UNC-G jumped to a 16-5 lead as Western missed nine of its first 11 shots.

The Lady Cats used an 18-6 run to take their only lead at 25-23 on a three-pointer by April Fleck at the 2:23 mark.

Tiffany Hamm pulled down 12 rebounds helping WCU to a 48-41 advantage on the boards. UNC-G's Sandi Reid had eight rebounds.

WCU shot 35.1 percent from the floor.

ChoRhonda Gwaltney handed out six assists for the Lady Spartans, and Samika Foster came up with four steals. Western's Christy Blackwell had four assists.

Completing the WCU scoring were April Fleck with nine, Janetta Heggins and Hamm with eight apiece, Blackwell with five, Marsha McGillivary with four, Katie Scott with three and Kris Kent with two.

The Lady Cats were scheduled to play Tuesday at Davidson. Results were not known at the Herald sports deadline. Other upcoming games are 7 p.m. Saturday at Wofford and 7 p.m. Monday at home against Chattanooga. All three are conference opponents.
