Cats win over Stetson; lose game to Belmont |

Cory Largent scored 24 points as Western Carolina picked up its first win over a Division I opponent this season by stopping Stetson 74-64 last Thursday at the Ramsey Center.
Willie Freeman and Casey Rogers both had 13 points, and Corey Wells added 11. The Hatters were led by Sebastian Singletary with 17 points and Santos Hampton with 16. The score was 34-34 at intermission and stayed close most of the second half. The Catamounts used a 19-6 run to open 10-point lead with 57 seconds remaining. Free throws by Rogers and Largent kept Western in front. WCU made 45.5 percent of its field goal tries to Stetson's 35.7 percent. The Hatters dominated the boards 50-39. Leading the way were Hampton and Singletary with 14 and 13, respectively. Freeman had 11 rebounds for the Cats. Rogers handed out five assists, and Wells came up with three steals. Stetson was hurt by 20 turnovers while Western committed just 12. Completing the WCU scoring were Rans Brempong with six, Kori Hatcher with five and Todd Seibert with two. Wes Burtner scored 29 of his 32 points in the second half Saturday as Belmont beat Western 85-74 in Nashville, Tenn. Providing offensive support for the Bruins were Adam Sonn with 16 and Steve Drabyn and B.J. Proffitt with 10 apiece. The Cats (2-7) were led by Wells with 19 points. Also in double figures were Rogers with 14, Freeman with 13 and Largent with 11. Belmont had a 35-21 cushion going into halftime, thanks in part to an 11-1 run capped by Proffitt's three-pointer near the buzzer. Western cut the deficit to five on a pair of free throws by Wells with 13:46 to play but could come no closer. The biggest margin was 82-66 on two foul shots by Burtner with 42 seconds to go. The Bruins shot 43.1 percent from the floor compared to WCU's 39.2 percent. Sonn's 12 rebounds helped Belmont to a 37-30 advantage on the boards. Wells had six for the Cats. Completing the WCU scoring were Hatcher with eight, Seibert with seven and Neil Rasnake with two. The Cats were scheduled to play Mercer at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Results were not known at Herald press time. They will travel to Marquette for a 7 p.m. contest next Wednesday. |
