Western Carolina lost a pair of heartbreakers against military schools in Southern Conference men's basketball action during the past week.

The Catamounts (2-13, 0-3) lost at Citadel 56-54 in overtime Monday after dropping a 70-69 overtime decision Saturday at Virginia Military.

They lost their conference opener 73-57 to Davidson at home Jan. 3.

At Citadel, Alan Puckett hit two free throws with 14.5 seconds left for the only overtime points giving the Bulldogs the win.

Mike Roy scored 14 points for the Bulldogs while Cliff Washburn and Max Mombollet both had 10. The Cats were led by Cory Largent with 15 points and Rans Brempong with 14.

Western rallied from a 12-point deficit with 4:47 remaining in regulation on the shooting of Casey Rogers and Largent.

Citadel's Travis Cantrell had a chance to end the game in regulation, but was called for a charge with 2.7 seconds left. Largent tried for a three-pointer at the buzzer, but it fell short.

Each team missed six shots in overtime, and WCU suffered a costly turnover. Rogers fouled Puckett going for a loose ball setting up the game-winning free throws.

Largent was again short on a shot at the buzzer. Citadel led 29-26 at halftime.

Neither team shot well with Western hitting 40 percent of its field goal tries and the Bulldogs making just 32.4 percent.

Seven rebounds apiece by Cantrell and Clyde Wormley helped Citadel to a 47-41 advantage on the boards. WCU's Willie Freeman was the game's top rebounder with 11.

Western committed 20 turnovers, and Citadel had 15.

A basket by VMI's Eric Mann with 1:19 remaining proved to be the difference as the Keydets held on for their 70-69 victory.

The Cats battled back from a 14-point deficit early in the second half and took their only lead of the game when Rogers converted a three-point play for a 69-68 edge at the 1:36 mark.

VMI answered on the ensuing possession when Mann nailed a turnaround 10-footer in the lane and was fouled by Freeman. The free throw was no good, but Western could not capitalize and missed its last four shots.

Mann scored 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Daron Pressley also had 12 points while Jeremy Harper and Nick Richardson netted 10 apiece.

Largent led all scorers with 24 points. Rogers finished with 14, and Freeman had 10 points and 12 rebounds.

VMI was on top 39-28 at intermission.
